User Roles & Permissions

NASA assigns one of three roles to each participant in a stream. Roles are set per stream - a user can be Scrum Master in one stream and Participant in another.

Roles

Scrum Master

The primary meeting facilitator. Each stream has exactly one Scrum Master.

  • Add and reorder items during live Team Meetings

  • Duplicate the stream

  • Export Team Journal to Confluence

Coverer

A backup facilitator with nearly the same rights as the Scrum Master. A stream can have multiple Coverers.

  • Start and end meetings

  • Configure settings

  • Add and reorder items during live Team Meetings

  • Duplicate the stream

  • Export Team Journal to Confluence

  • Cannot delete the stream

Participant

A regular team member who prepares updates and attends meetings.

  • Prepare My Update (add Jira issues, Confluence pages, text items, answer questions)

  • Attend meetings and react with emojis

  • View the Team Journal

  • Cannot start/end meetings, add items during live meetings, or change settings

Key Limitations

  • Roles cannot be changed during a live meeting. End the meeting first, then adjust roles in Settings > Users.

  • Different roles per stream. The same person can hold different roles across different streams.

Global App Access

Jira administrators control who can use NASA via Jira Settings > System > Global Permissions > NASA Standup App Use Permission. By default, all licensed Jira users have access unless this permission is restricted to specific groups.

For details, see App Use Permissions (System/Global Permissions).
