Context Fields

Context Fields let you display additional Jira field data on issue cards during preparation and live meetings. You can configure up to two extra fields per meeting stream, per project, and per issue type. This gives your team immediate visibility into relevant metadata without leaving the NASA app.

Context fields are configured per stream, per project, and per issue type. Changes apply to that specific combination only.

Configure Context Fields

To set up context fields for a meeting stream:

  1. Open the meeting stream and navigate to Settings > General.

  2. Scroll to the Context Fields section and expand it.

  3. Click Add Field.

  4. Select a Project from the dropdown (only projects on the stream's board are available).

  5. Select an Issue Type (Task, Story, Bug, Epic, or Sub-task).

  6. Choose up to 2 fields from the available list.

  7. Click Save, then Save Changes on the settings page.

You can add multiple project and issue type combinations. Each combination has its own pair of context fields.

Supported Field Types

System Fields

  • Project - display the project name or key

  • Resolution - show the resolution status

  • Due Date - highlight deadlines

  • Start Date - show the planned start

  • Parent - link to the epic or parent issue

  • Components - technical components affected

  • Versions (Fix versions) - release versions

  • Labels - custom categorization labels

Custom Fields

Custom fields available in your Jira project also appear in the field picker. Supported custom field types include:

  • Text fields - plain text, URLs

  • Number fields - float and decimal values

  • Date fields - date and datetime

  • Label fields - custom label fields

Only fields visible in the Jira issue screen layout for the selected project and issue type appear in the field picker.

How Context Fields Display

Configured context fields appear as compact badges below the issue summary on every issue card. They are visible in:

  • My Update (preparation mode)

  • Live Meeting

  • Team Journal (Team Meetings only)

Each badge shows the field name as a tooltip and the field value inline. If a field has no value, the badge still appears with an empty indicator.

Edit Context Fields During Meetings

Some context field types can be edited directly during a live meeting without opening Jira:

  • Plain text fields (single-line and multi-line, no rich text or line breaks)

  • URL fields

  • Float/decimal number fields

All other field types (labels, dates, versions, components, parent, project, resolution) are read-only during meetings. Clicking a read-only context field badge displays a tooltip with the full field name and value.

Limitations

  • Maximum 2 context fields per stream, per project, per issue type.

  • Fields must be visible in the Jira issue screen layout (schema, screen, layout) for the selected project and issue type.

  • Most field types are read-only during meetings. Only plain text, URL, and float/decimal fields are editable.

  • Changes to context field configuration require saving the stream settings and take effect on the next meeting preparation or page reload.

Troubleshooting

Context fields not showing on issue cards

  • Verify the context field is configured for the correct project and issue type combination. A configuration for “Story” does not apply to “Task” issues.

  • Check that the field exists and is visible in the Jira issue screen layout.

  • Reload the page after saving context field changes.

Cannot edit a context field during a meeting

  • Only plain text, URL, and float/decimal fields support in-meeting editing. All other types are read-only.

  • Verify you have Jira edit permissions on the issue.
