Notifications

The Notifications tab lets you configure Slack reminders that notify participants about upcoming meetings. Two types of reminders are available:

  • Update Reminder – reminds participants to prepare their status updates before the meeting.

  • Meeting Reminder – announces that a meeting is about to start.

Both reminders use Slack’s native /remind command. Each stream can target a different Slack channel with customizable timing and message text.

Slack Only

Slack is the only notification method. NASA does not currently support email notifications.

Update Reminder

The Update Reminder sends a Slack message to remind participants to prepare their status updates before the meeting begins.

Configuring the Update Reminder

  1. Open the NASA app, navigate to Settings, and select the Notifications tab.

  2. Expand the Update Reminder section by clicking the arrow next to it.

  3. Set when the reminder is sent:

    • Before the Meeting – choose a number of minutes before the meeting starts (e.g., 3, 5, 10, 15, 30 minutes).

    • Custom Time – select a specific time of day in 30-minute intervals.

  4. Enter the Slack channel name where the reminder will be posted.

  5. Edit the Reminder message. The default message includes a [My Update] placeholder that becomes a link to the participant’s update page. You can reposition or rename this placeholder within the message.

  6. Click Copy Slackbot Command to copy the generated command.

  7. Paste the command into the designated Slack channel to activate the reminder.

Click Copy link for the ‘My Update’ page to copy just the My Update URL. Use this link in calendar invites or other notification tools outside Slack.

Meeting Reminder

The Meeting Reminder sends a Slack message to inform participants that the meeting is about to start.

Configuring the Meeting Reminder

  1. Expand the Meeting Reminder section by clicking the arrow next to it.

  2. Set when the reminder is sent:

    • Before the Meeting – choose a number of minutes before the meeting starts.

    • Custom Time – select a specific time of day in 30-minute intervals.

  3. Enter the Slack channel name where meeting start notifications will be posted.

  4. Optionally enter a Meeting Link (e.g., Zoom or Google Meet URL). This link is included in the reminder message as a [Video Meeting] placeholder.

  5. Edit the Reminder message. The default message includes a [NASA Live Meeting] placeholder that links to the live meeting page, and a [Video Meeting] placeholder for the video call link.

  6. Click Copy Slackbot Command and paste the command into the Slack channel.

Slackbot Command

Both reminder types generate a Slackbot command that you paste into your Slack channel. The command follows this format:

  1. /remind #channel-name "Your reminder message with [link]" every Monday and Tuesday ... at 08:55 AM

The schedule in the command automatically matches the meeting days and times configured in the Time & Date settings tab.

No Slack App Required

The Slackbot command uses Slack’s native /remind feature. No additional Slack app installation is required – the Slackbot reminder is a built-in Slack capability available in all workspaces.

Enable Markup in Slack

To ensure Slack reminders display formatted links correctly, enable markup in your Slack preferences before running the Slackbot commands:

Advanced > Input Options > Format messages with markup

Remember to save

Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page after modifying any settings. Unsaved changes are lost when navigating away.
