FAQ & Troubleshooting
This comprehensive FAQ section addresses common questions and issues users may encounter when using NASA - Not Another Standup App.
You will find more FAQs here:
Setup & Installation
How do I install NASA - Not Another Standup App?
Open Jira and go to Apps → Explore more apps (or visit the Atlassian Marketplace)
Search for "NASA"
Select the app listing, then click Get app or Free trial
Confirm any permissions (read/write on Jira issues, user data, etc.)
Complete installation
For detailed instructions, see the Getting Started Guide.
What permissions do I need to install NASA?
You need Site Admin (Cloud) privileges to install Marketplace apps.
Why can't I see NASA after installation?
Check that:
The installation completed successfully
You're in a Jira group with app access
The NASA icon appears in your Jira sidebar
If issues persist, contact your Jira administrator or see the Troubleshooting section below.
Do I need separate licenses for NASA?
NASA typically counts as an app license in Atlassian Marketplace; all participants require the standard Jira license plus appropriate NASA licensing.
Board Integration
Can I link multiple Jira boards to a single Stream?
No, one primary board is recommended per stream. But you can create a Board based on multiple Jira Projects. See Meeting Settings for more information on board configuration.
Are filters restricted to the board filter?
No, you can specify a separate Jira filter (JQL) for "Suggested Issues," independent of the board's default filter. This gives you flexibility in which issues appear during meeting preparation. Learn more in the Meeting Settings section.
How do I ensure the right issues appear in my meetings?
Configure your stream's "Suggested Issues" settings to use:
Priority-based filtering
Issue Type filtering
Status-based filtering
Custom JQL filters
For detailed instructions, see Meeting Settings.
Can I use issues from multiple projects in a single stream?
Yes, by creating a custom JQL filter that spans multiple projects. For example:
- project in (PROJECT1, PROJECT2) AND assignee = currentUser()
User Roles
What's the difference between Scrum Master and Coverer?
Both have similar live-meeting rights, but only the Scrum Master can delete the entire stream. The Coverer is effectively a backup facilitator who can lead meetings when the Scrum Master is unavailable. See the User Roles section for more details.
How do I assign a Scrum Master in NASA?
Go to Settings → Users
Find "Scrum Master" section
Start typing the name of the Jira user you want to set as the Scrum Master
Click on their name to select them
Save your changes
How do I add Participants to my NASA standup stream?
Go to Settings → Users
Find "Meeting Participants" section
Click on "Add Users"
Start typing the name of the Jira user you want to add
Click on their name to select them
Save your changes
Can participants reorder items mid-Standup?
Technically, yes - but it’s not a recommended or officially supported workflow. There is no visible button or menu option to reorder items during a stand-up meeting, as this can lead to issues. For example, if a participant’s update has already received reactions (like emojis) or follow-up flags, modifying the update during the meeting may cause those inputs to be lost.
However, if a participant urgently needs to reorder or change something, they can do so by exiting NASA (e.g., using the browser back button or clicking on a Jira navigation item). While the stand-up meeting is still in progress, they can reopen NASA, go to My Update, make the changes, and re-enter the meeting lobby. Their update will then be repushed to the live meeting.
While this can be helpful in specific situations, we generally recommend avoiding it - especially in stand-up meetings where focus and speed are key. In most cases, a missing or slightly out-of-order item is less disruptive than breaking the meeting flow.
Meeting Management
Standups often exceed 15 minutes. Any tips?
Encourage thorough My Update prep before meetings
Use the timer feature to keep updates concise
Flag items for follow-up instead of discussing in detail
Consider switching to a Team Meeting format if deeper discussions are needed
See Choosing the Right Meeting Type for guidance on meeting formats.
Can we run meetings at unscheduled times?
Yes, NASA supports ad hoc starts by the Scrum Master or Coverer, even outside the scheduled time. Simply navigate to your stream and click "Start Meeting" when needed.
How do I handle team members who consistently miss meetings?
Check if they're receiving notifications properly
Consider adjusting meeting times if scheduling is an issue
Review their user permissions to ensure proper access
Discuss the importance of participation in team meetings
There is no automatic handling of absent participants in NASA.
Issue Tracking
How do I turn a text note into a Jira Issue after creation?
Currently, you must do so upon creating the text item. A workaround is removing it to the clipboard and re-adding as a Jira Issue. Future improvements may simplify this workflow.
Do follow-up items become Jira tickets automatically?
No, follow-up is just a flag. The Scrum Master or team must create or update Jira issues as needed. See the Team Journal section for best practices on handling follow-ups.
How can I find Jira issues that aren't shown in the 'Suggested Issues' section?
Click on the "Search" button within the right-hand panel in NASA and search for the desired issue by typing the issue name in the text box, then add it to your update by clicking on the "Plus" button next to the issue name.
Can I create Jira issues directly from NASA?
Yes, you can create a new Jira issue by clicking on the "Create Issue" button within the NASA app and then adding it to the meeting stream.
Customization Options
Can I rename "Blockers" to something else?
Yes, by customizing standup questions in the Stream's setup. You can add or remove questions as needed. See Meeting Settings for instructions.
Is there a way to add mandatory meeting fields or a forced question?
Currently, NASA does not enforce mandatory fields. However, any question left unanswered is visibly empty to the team, which encourages completion.
Can I customize the color scheme and branding of NASA?
The only customization option available at this stage is to update the standup stream meeting icon. More visual customization options may be available in future updates.
Can I save and reuse standup stream configurations?
No, for the moment, you need to manually configure each new standup stream. There is no template or cloning feature currently available.
Analytics & Reporting
Does NASA track velocity or sprint burndown?
Not directly. NASA focuses on meeting facilitation. You can still use Jira's built-in reports for sprint analytics. The My Overview section provides some basic metrics, but comprehensive analytics remain in Jira.
Can we see average standup duration or other stats?
Basic stats appear in My Overview & Team Jorunal (e.g., SU Participation). More advanced analytics are planned for future releases.
Is there a way to export meeting data for analysis?
Yes. You can export the Team Journal as a Confluence Page.
Notifications & Alerts
Slack reminders aren't working. How can I fix this?
Recheck the Slack channel/DM settings in "Notifications"
Check that notification timing is configured appropriately
Does NASA email participants?
Not at the moment. Currently, Slack is the primary notification method.
How do I set custom notifications based on team preferences?
Custom notifications to Slack can be configured from the notification section in Meeting Settings. You can set:
Update reminder timing (e.g., 30 minutes before meeting)
Meeting reminder timing (e.g., 3 minutes before meeting)
Troubleshooting
What should I do if NASA is not loading or opening correctly?
Try refreshing the application page, clearing your browser cache, or restarting your JIRA session. If the problem persists, contact your JIRA administrator or resolution support.
I've encountered an error message. Who should I report this to?
Report any error messages to your JIRA administrator or directly to resolution support. Be sure to include the error message text and any relevant screenshots.
Users are experiencing intermittent access to NASA. What troubleshooting steps are available?
Check that all users have proper permissions in Jira
Verify the app is properly installed and up to date
Check for any network connectivity issues
Ensure users are accessing NASA through the supported browsers
Contact support if issues persist
Known Issues & Workarounds
Forge Limitations
Some real-time collaboration features (e.g., all participants creating items mid-Standup) are not fully accessible. Planned expansions once Atlassian Forge updates.
Multiple Streams Overlap
If participants belong to many streams with similar timings, Slack reminders may overlap. Adjust times or channels to avoid confusion.
